Benjamin Franklin was it’s first Postmaster
Unions within the Postal Service do not have the right to go on strike, just the right to collective bargaining
Is the largest retail company in America
Has over 700,000 employees
Has one of the largest fleet of vehicles in America
Has won awards for being ecological in it operations
Before it became known as The United States Postal Service it was called the Postal Department
It is not a Government agency anymore, its an independent organization governed by a board of postal governors (non postal employees)
The Postal Service has seen some drastic changes over the years, from the various types of vehicles it has employed over the years to automation . It is a very unique organization, they deliver mail to every address in America no matter where it is located, from the large offices located in big cities that are almost a city in itself to the little post office located and operated out of a small town general store. A piece of first class mail can go anywhere in the United States in three business days in most kinds of weather. Mail is being transported and delivered in a variety of ways. Mail is flown to destinations all over the world. In some parts of the country it still travels by train. The post Office delivers mail by trucks, postal vehicles such as the LLV’s (long life vehicles) FFV’s (flexible fuel vehicles) old style jeeps, privately owned vehicles, bicycles, hand pushed carts, even horses.
The Postal Service is very much automated, processing the majority of the mail by machines. It has set up in numerous locations automated postal machines where you can buy a book of stamps, weigh a package affix postage to it and drop it in the bottom of the machine. You can even buy stamps over the internet. Yes it is very automated, but very antiquated. Like I said previously it still delivers mail by horse in some locations. Walk into a post office in small town America and one in a big city and you know what I am talking about.
The Post Office has never had layoffs, but with the prospect of a loss of 1.1 Billion you would think that something has to be done. The Post Office will be offering early retirement probably by the end of 2008. They project to trim 50,000 people from it’s work force nation wide. Part of that will come from early retirement but most likely they will layoff what they need to trim that by 50,000, since anyone with less that 3yrs are not protected from layoffs.
Rising fuel costs, loss of revenue, paying bills through the internet, stiff competition from UPS, FedEx, a troubled economy have been some of the contributors to the financial fix they are in, not to mention the waste within the Post Office not unlike any other government agency or quasi government agency. Even though they are not a government agency they still act like a government agency.
I for one would like to see the Postal Service go on forever. It is a great American institution. It is still the greatest Postal Service in the world. Drastic changes need to be made for it to survive. I hope that the powers that be can have courage and do what is needed .
